During my pastoral work in 1997, I encountered a distressing scene—a group of children scouring a cabbage heap for food. It was a period marred by the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic, claiming countless lives across Uganda. Operating within this region, we bore witness to a grim reality, burying victims of the epidemic on a weekly basis. In the midst of this hardship, the slums were filled with orphaned children left to fend for themselves, scavenging and begging for survival.
Deeply moved by their plight, I was driven by a divine inspiration to initiate a children's project—an embodiment of God's love through the provision of essentials such as food, education, and shelter. Despite lacking the means, I placed my trust in God to manifest this calling. Miraculously, an opportunity arose when a generous benefactor facilitated the purchase of 5 acres of land in NSUMBI, Nansana, situated on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda's capital.
Supported by kind-hearted individuals from the UK, we commenced the project humbly, welcoming approximately 70 underprivileged children from the slums into our primary school. Over the years, the unwavering support of well-wishers from the UK and USA has sustained our cause. As time progressed, our vision expanded, leading us to establish Sozo High School, located 50 miles from Kampala in a rural setting. Our mission extended beyond providing secondary education; Sozo aimed to equip young individuals, nurturing them with valuable life skills, particularly in agriculture. The inception of Farming With A Purpose (FWAP), an initiative by Sozo students, has empowered them to utilize farming not only for sustenance but also as a means to fund their further education post A-levels.
Driven by the success of our educational endeavors and the quality we provide, even privileged parents sought our services, necessitating the expansion of our project. Our future endeavors include venturing into large-scale commercial farming, aimed at ensuring self-sustainability while generating profits to propel our advancement.
